A trip to the movies is a fairly routine excursion: a darkened theater, a flurry of coming attractions, nauseating amounts of popcorn. Determined to shake up the formula, the folks at the British film shorts organization Future Shorts have launched Secret Cinema, an underground theme-based movie series in which both film and venue are kept under wraps until showtime. Here’s how it goes down. On the day of the screening, members who have logged on to the org’s Web site (www.secretcinema.org) receive an e-mail with the venue address and a hint about which picture will be shown. The 300 cineastes who turned up for the series’ debut yesterday at London’s Shipwright Yard were treated to a preview of the Gus Van Sant skater flick “Paranoid Park,” which won’t hit theaters until December 26. The screening was accompanied by various skateboard-related performances and an indoor skate park. Word has it that future screenings, which will range from yet-to-be-released features to cult classics, will be housed in derelict theaters and luxury-hotel car parks, on rooftops, and even in graveyards.
