The audience at last night’s IFC Center screening of Jennifer Venditti’s new documentary, “Billy the Kid,” was peppered with indie film cognoscenti. Spotted among the downtown cool kids and waifish models (Venditti is a casting director, after all) were John Turturro, John Cameron Mitchell, Alexandra Cassevetes, and Jonathan Caouette. Whether they came to support or size up Venditti’s freshman efforts at directing, the group left as genuine fans. “Best movie of the year. Jennifer has definitely made a classic,” declared Cameron Mitchell of the documentary, which follows its subject, Billy, a well-meaning but emotionally troubled tenth-grader, as he attempts to evade town bullies (unsuccessfully) and looks for love (successfully). While Venditti’s name is new to the film circuit, she’s a well-known fixture in the fashion industry. Her casting agency, JV8Inc, has supplied models for everything from W magazine shoots to Louis Vuitton men’s shows. Perhaps as a way of returning the favor, Marc Jacobs is currently carrying “Billy the Kid” promotional materials in his Manhattan Marc by Marc Jacobs store.
