‘Tis truly better to give than to receive. According to the fashion community, anyway: Style.com asked a number of designers for their holiday wish lists, and to a one, they were all more interested in telling us about the gifts they were wrapping than the ones they wanted. Rachel Roy, for example, wished to give “a family vacation through India, from Kashmir in the Indian Himalayas to see the temples, all the way to Goa and the Arabian Sea coast.” Family, naturally, was a bit of theme in this informal poll. Accessories designer Joy Gryson is donating to her favorite charity, Family Focus Adoption Services, and picking out things princesslike for daughter Olivia. “She loves anything pink,” Gryson told us. “I can’t wish for anything better than her reaction when she gets a present like that. It’s truly priceless.” Loeffler Randall’s Jessie Randall is likewise family-focused. “A donation to the Children’s Health Fund,” she said, ticking off her list, “and I’m giving the boys each a quilt that I made for them after taking a class at Purl Patchwork in Soho.” Speaking of family giving, Karen Walker is giving birth. Her new baby is due on Christmas day, so the queen of Kiwi style can cite both ethics and big-belly logistics as the reason she’s skipping trips to the mall in favor of donations to Oxfam. “I’m giving in the name of friends and family,” she explains. “Everything from fresh drinking water, food, and schoolbooks to goats.” Carlos Miele didn’t mention anything about goats, but all the animals of the Amazon can thank him for the gifts he’s handing out this season, rain-forest tees. “It’s an incredibly gratifying project. I had the chance to partner on with the Rainforest Foundation-U.S.,” he explained. Do-gooding is well and good, of course, but eventually, you just can’t trump stuff. Built By Wendy’s Wendy Mullin is supplementing her donations to the charity 826NYC with a few stocking stuffers Style.com staffers wouldn’t mind waking up to Christmas morning: “Monogrammed rings from Bittersweets NY, the Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy CD ‘The Letting Go,’ and Wonder Showzen DVDs.” But by general assent, the designer gift we covet most is the one being given by Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra: A urethane-rubber bearskin rug by EelkoMoorer, price upon request. Which is kind of like “priceless,” only better.
