Andy Warhol is best known for his bombastically colored silk-screen canvases and the major green they yield at auction, but London’s Timothy Taylor Gallery, which is hosting the exhibit “Andy Warhol: Portraits and Landscapes” beginning January 18, is determined to give his lesser-known black-and-white photographs their time in the spotlight.

Photographs were an important source of material for Warhol, and while few of these rarely seen 10″ x 8″ images—more than 200 of them—that were taken on the streets of London and New York between 1976 and 1987 evolved into silk screens, they all display his voracious attention to his surroundings.

Under his gaze, mannequins, drunks, pigeons, and children’s toys became compelling inspiration. The exhibition demonstrates that as a photographer and a “lover of boring things,” Warhol was as serious as a strong cup of tea and as important as the world around us.
