Though Berlin’s symbol is the bear, a night owl would be more apt. But despite the city’s partying fervor, its casual cool energy doesn’t call for much red-carpet attire. Which might explain why most of the eveningwear on Berlin’s catwalks was pretty enough, but not terribly inspired or inspiring. An exception was Sisi Wasabi’s white silk floor-length evening gown (above), part of the collection shown last night at the brand’s flagship store on Mitte’s Unter den Linden boulevard. Named after Sisi, the nineteenth-century Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and Japanese horseradish, Zerlina von dem Bussche’s line was conceived as a blend of East and West influences, but the balance comes off as quintessentially Berlin. The show had the young, relaxed, sensual elegance ordinarily on display in Berlin’s booming gallery scene. And while it was too dressy for the average art opening, the white gown demonstrated von dem Bussche’s stength in unfluffy femininity. Like the bracing condiment the label is named after, the Sisi Wasabi collection gave a welcome jolt to an otherwise bland Berlin fashion week.
