going ananas

Saving the earth without sacrificing style is easy in 2008, thanks to labels like Ananas, the handbag line by Jennifer Lagdameo. For spring, she’s created a line of totes, clutches, and shoulder bags in the brand’s signature silhouettes, rendered in all-natural fabrics. The shapely designs, in woven cotton or Philippine abaca, are coated in paraffin wax, which make them not only water resistant and durable, but also entirely chemical-free. And all the bags, like our favorite, the Samantha (above, which retails for about $375), feature wooden or shell closures from sustainable sources. The best part about the bags might be what you buy, but don’t carry—a tree. For every Ananas eco-friendly bag purchased, the company will plant a tree in the Philippines in collaboration with Trees for the Future. You can’t beat getting a cute tote and planting a tree without breaking a nail.
