hooked on classics

Alexander Wang’s got fashion week in the bag. Not only has the designer landed one of the coveted Ecco Domani awards for 2008, but his brand-new handbag collection lands in stores in February, and it’s a sure bet that Wang’s grit-meets-glam carryalls will number among the front row’s totes of choice. “We’re only selling the bags through five retailers worldwide,” Wang explains. “The idea was to start small and exclusive. Even though both the bags retail for under $700, we really wanted them to feel special.” The capsule handbag collection grows from two to eight styles for Fall, but, as Wang notes, the attitude will remain the same. “I was thinking, how do you create a new classic staple? Like, the Chanel quilted bag—it’s totally distinctive, but it doesn’t age,” reflects Wang. “I didn’t want to make an It bag. So even though I’m keeping the bags true to the graphic edge of my line, I’ve also been making sure that every aspect of them is timeless enough to last through the trends.” When he’s not devising the next Birkin, Wang is obsessing about his Fall ‘08 show. “We love our venue, we love our time slot, we love the fact that getting the Ecco Domani means we can invite as many people as we want and do the show right,” he says. “Everything from the shoes to the lighting; I’m telling you, we’re taking it all as far as we can. Alexander Wang bags will be available at Edon Manor and Kirna Zabête in New York and Satine in Los Angeles.
