We knew that the new teen drama “Gossip Girl” had a healthy fan base. We just didn’t realize how many of those fans were old enough to vote. There was nary an underage drinker in sight at last night’s Chanel Nuit de Diamants dinner at the Plaza hotel. And yet all eyes were on the show’s co-stars Blake Lively and Penn Badgley, the Sam and Diane of the CW. Were they dating in real life? Was her hair color natural? Who was he texting during the entrée course? We needed to know. Like. Now. One lady-who-lunches type practically bulldozed over world-class beauty Helena Christensen to snap a camera phone picture of Lively during cocktail hour. The actors handled the maelstrom of attention like pros. Apparently, it’s par for the course. Badgley recalled one incident a few months ago when he was mobbed on the street by over 50 schoolgirls (and one or two schoolboys). “It was overwhelming,” he sighed. “I felt like Brad Pitt in Japan.” Lively had a few bizarre encounters of her own to recount. “I was outside of a restaurant in Soho the other day and I started talking to a man who was pushing his baby,” she said. “He was in his forties and the last person you’d expect to be watching our show. And I was just, like, cooing over his baby and he goes, No, you don’t want one and, yes, I watch ‘Gossip Girl.’ “
