“A reporter said to me, ‘You’re a celebrity now.’ He’s acting like he wants to ruin me!’ ” joked Scott Schuman, also known as the Sartorialist (and Condé Net’s in-house street photographer), at his debut photography exhibition at Danziger Projects in New York last night. Schuman’s blog, The Sartorialist, began as a hobby and eventually grew into an online habit for the fashion-obsessed. “I spent time trying to shoot people as I saw them, in a romantic and inspiring way,” he explained. The exhibition features prints of images found on the blog, ranging from shots of Paris Vogue’s Carine Roitfeld and The Village Voice’s Lynn Yaeger to chic old men and unidentified young glamour-pusses. Describing his method, Schuman said, “One subject is only important when played against the other—in real life, they may never interact, but as personalities, they’re very similar.” His friend Michael Bastian of Bill Blass said of Schuman’s technique, “I’ve seen Scott work, and he does it in three seconds. He’s got crazy rare talent. He finds the needle in a haystack and shoots it perfectly.” Does Schuman consider himself an artist? “Wow, maybe I am.”
