Designer update

ladies in red

January 24, 2008  4:08 pm

Alber

To wrap up his 45-year career in fashion, Valentino cast his red spotlight on a tent in the Musée Rodin and studded the front row with stars: Claudia Schiffer, blonder-than ever Nadja Auermann, Devon Aoki, and Eva Herzigova sat alongside actress Lucy Liu. Nearby were Uma Thurman and her beau, French-Swiss financier Arpad Busson. The designer’s recently named protégée, Alessandra Facchinetti, was in attendance, as was Miuccia Prada and Betty Catroux. The show started with sweeping operatic music straight out of Hollywood’s golden era and ended with Annie Lennox’s “No More ‘I Love You’s’ ” and a sober virtual video parade of red-clad models—a theme echoed on the runway as the models took one last exit, all clad in the same red gown. “It’s sad in a way, because it marks the end of an era,” said Alber Elbaz after the show. “It makes you ask yourself where couture is going, and who the clients are.” Then, upon reflection, he added: “Couture is all about technique and a dream. So as long as there are dreams, it will continue.” Does this mean he is mulling over his own couture collection? “Life is full of surprises,” he replied. “But right now I am going back to the studio to work on my ready-to-wear!”
