It took a few years of boredom, parents that indulged his adolescent music tastes, a move across the ocean, and a bowl of cereal for Michigan-born, sometime DJ Jared Abbott to find his true calling: a weekly music blog. “I needed a hobby, and I like sharing music with people,” he told us. “I’ve been a music fan since I was in the womb. My parents bought every record and tape I asked for when I was growing up.” Abbott, who lives in Madrid, has affectionately called his site www.fuckyouonfriday.com. You’d think there might be a kinky reason for such an explicitly titled URL, but Abbott says he was merely pleased with the alliteration. “The name came to me while I was eating cereal,” he deadpans. Abbott and his tech guys, Pedro and Lupen, update the site very late every Thursday night. New faves on the current playlist? Late of the Pier, Brodinski, Santogold, and Bobmo. And although he doesn’t mind much what they wear, Abbott can point to a few of the more stylish acts: M.I.A., PJ Harvey, Crystal Castles, the girls from Crime Mob, Blonde Redhead, and Eleanor from Fiery Furnaces. “I know a music writer in Bahrain who’s quite on top of things,” Abbott, who lived in New York City for seven years, says in defense of his European post, adding, “I don’t turn on the radio often, but in the clubs in Madrid people actually dance and enjoy themselves. There is a lot of style in this town, but it’s more natural and less about posing.”
