Apes

When Twentieth Century-Fox approached Life magazine lensman Dennis Stock to photograph the filming of “Planet of the Apes” in 1967, he accepted the assignment on one condition: that he be allowed to usher its elaborately made-up cast (a staggering 80 makeup artists worked on the production) off-set and onto the street to shoot the actors in conventional California settings. “Such situations were more of interest to me than the movie set and offered greater opportunities for the surreal,” the 80-year-old photographer told us. Stock’s images of the cult sci-fi film’s actors will be on display at Colette in Paris from January 7-26, as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of Magnum Photos. Bonus film-buff trivia: Ingrid Bergman said that one of the greatest regrets of her career was turning down the role of Zira.
