“What are your thoughts on the writers’ strike?” That was the question on every reporter’s lips as a litany of A-list stars sashayed down the red carpet and into the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures Awards Gala last night at New York’s Cipriani. “Get it over with. Do whatever it takes,” urged George Clooney. And that was pretty much the gist of every celeb’s response. The stars may be of one mind when it comes to unionized labor disputes, but ask them to single out the year’s best film performance, and their united front crumbles. “Definitely Tilda Swinton in ‘Michael Clayton,’ ” said Emily Mortimer. “She was so weird and scary but completely real.” Swinton, meanwhile, preferred Kelly Macdonald in “No Country for Old Men.” Julie Christie’s vote went for Anamaria Marinca in the Romanian drama “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.” And Julian Schnabel ran down a list of names the length of which could rival the SAG directory. “Daniel Day-Lewis, Johnny Depp, Emile Hirsch, Casey Affleck, Javier Bardem, Hal Holbrook, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page…” said the director of “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” “Oh, and all the people in my movie.”
