the smell of an election year

The Spanish singer and actress Rossy de Palma was in New York this week for the official U.S. launch of her perfume, Eau de Protection by État Libre d’Orange, which is available exclusively at Henri Bendel (it’s an explosive, woodsy rose that that gets a big nod of approval from Chandler Burr). We caught up with her there on Wednesday morning, where the talk was, not surprisingly, about scents. “All these perfumes are about seduction—about getting a husband,” de Palma said. “But I think when you perfume yourself, you want a more spiritual moment. The ancient Egyptians put on scented oils for spiritual protection—it’s the first purpose of perfume, even if no one thinks about that anymore.” The smell of New York, she added, moving off topic, had shifted. “The last time I was here was the day after Bush was elected. People were in shock. But it’s a different energy now. You can smell it.”
