circle of friends

The Friends of Ben were out in force at the Altman Building on Monday night: Artists Dan Colen and Nate Lowman, Karen O. and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the MisShapes, skateboarder Spanky, and actor and man-about-town Leo Fitzpatrick were among the Ben Cho fans supporting the designer as he sent what turned out to be a surprisingly commercial collection down the catwalk. The general consensus among the Sway-scene usual suspects was that everyone would be following Cho to Webster Hall that night, where he’d be manning the decks at the Opening Ceremony/MAC/Self Service party for his longtime pal Chloë Sevigny—who was seated front-row, never mind her imminent hosting duties. And as the minutes before show time ticked on, pretty much everyone was wondering how in holy hell the party planners had managed to get the Slits to play. According to Opening Ceremony’s Humberto Leon, the answer boils down to: What Chloë wants, Chloë gets. “We asked her to make up a list of bands she’d like to see play,” Leon explained, “and the Slits was at the top of the list. I can’t even remember if she named anyone else, to be honest. And so,” he continued, “at that point it just came down to making calls. It was like a big game of telephone—I’d call one person, and they’d call someone else, and that person would ask another somebody to call me, and eventually we got to the band. Once we got to the Slits, it was easy: It turns out that they love Chloë, too.”
