Designer update

closet case

Like a lot of little girls, Alexa Wagner liked playing dress-up. But her options were limited by her chic grandmother (”She was more in the French style than German”), whose large collection of matching shoes and handbags were off-limits to small hands.
This didn’t, however, prevent her granddaughter from becoming a footwear designer. “She would say, you can look but not touch,” says the German-born, Milan-based Wagner, who’s in New York with her Fall ‘08 collection this week and next.
“But I always had that image of her closet in my mind.” Since launching her line in 2004, Wagner has translated her memories into sleek heels and flats that have a whiff of retro sophistication but are still trend-conscious. Except for one thing: “Those very straight heels that you see everywhere now? You just can’t walk elegantly in them.
My heels have a bit of curve to them.”
