coming clean

Liz McClean may have eschewed the runway this season, but that didn’t stop the Brooklyn-based designer and stylist from putting on a show. With photographer Mary Rozzi in tow, McClean spent the past few months convincing some of the women on her speed dial to model looks from her new collection in portraits art-directed by the subjects themselves. Former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur; actresses Maya Rudolph, Summer Phoenix, and Keri Russell; and fashion insiders including Barneys New York creative director Julie Gilhart were among those who took McClean up on the offer, and last night, at a gallery in Nolita, the designer unveiled the series of photographs in an installation by Simone Rubi. More than a few of the models turned up in dresses designed by McClean, including singer Leslie Feist, who had flown in specifically for the event en route to the Grammys. “I don’t know too much about fashion, but Liz, Mary, and Simone all together, that’s like the apex of the pyramid for me,” said the singer, who has worked with all three. McClean blushed at the compliment and directed it the other way. “I’ve done runway shows before,” she noted, “but this season, I really felt like I wanted to showcase all these amazing, creative, hard-working women I know. They’re my inspiration.”
