Most designers choose to present their wares in tents at Bryant Park during fashion week (and since Style.com’s offices are three blocks away, we’re grateful), but others opt for an off-site venue, whether for inspiration, budget, seating, or security. Few venues are as appropriate, though, as Gustavo Arango’s choice to show at the much-lauded New Museum this evening. The Colombian-born designer, who excels at fluid draping and architectural silhouettes, teamed up with Korean artist Lee Sung-Keun for his Spring 2008 collection. The frocks, in a palette inspired by Lee’s work, were themselves museum-worthy—the painter, using large swaths of silk, created oversize masterpieces that Arango then draped, ruched, and sewed into dresses. Given the artistic flavor of his previous effort, we’re looking forward to seeing what he comes up with for the New Museum.
