Mandateheaven

While fashion shows are frequently crowded, rarely does the bearded stranger next to you ask, “Would you like to sit on my shoulders so you can see better?” Talk about a rock ‘n’ roll perspective. But then, Friday night’s Mandate of Heaven presentation, backed by the musical performance of Paige Wood, wasn’t your average industry event—it was part of the runway-free zone known as Williamsburg Fashion Weekend. The Mandate models traded in the catwalk for a more sex-kitten-meets-cool-girl approach, posing on music equipment crates and batting their eyelashes. Designer Carissa Ackerman said she’d been listening to “a lot of Stevie Nicks,” but was there a specific celebrity she dreamed of dressing? “Christina Ricci. I’ve been a fan of hers since childhood.” Her ideal customer, however, is “any girl who’s in control.” We believe that—Ackerman worked both the back and the front of the house during her show, even modeling a few looks herself.
