indie frock star

Forget socialites. Forget starlets. Forget pop tarts and MTV divas. With grunge redux on the runways and the likes of Karen O in the front row, New York fashion week was all about indie rock: Repeat appearances by Ryan Adams, Joanna Newsom, and M.I.A.; cameos by Hot Chip and Feist; Sonic Youth serenading the crowd at Marc Jacobs‘ show; and so on. It’s easy enough to get a jump on this fall trend, at least—buy something plaid, rejig the iPod, trade out the Moët for PBRs, and start telling your friends
that selling out is the new not selling out. Also, as a Valentine’s Day bonus, you can bid on a dress designed by an actual indie rocker, Mercury Prize winner Antony of Antony and the Johnsons. A one-off collaboration between the usually publicity-shy singer and online boutique Yoox.com, the silk jersey kimono-style dress goes up for auction on eBay today, with all proceeds going to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, a grassroots organization supporting the rights of the transgendered. If this particular dress escapes you, fear not—Antony says he’s cooking up a new project with Hussein Chalayan, details to come, while Yoox promises that more collaborations with musicians are in the works. (Please, Lord, Winehouse.) And in the meantime, natch, there’s always iTunes.
