it’s a zen thing

An amazing thing happened last night in the fashion world. At the opening of Shinjo Ito’s sculpture exhibit at Milk Gallery, not one person even mentioned Milan. Alvin Valley, for one, was enjoying having another chance to see this Buddhist great master’s work again. “I saw some of Shinjo’s work seven years ago in Japan, and it is great to see more. It’s just so beautiful and modern,” he said. Later, at the dinner at Donna Karan’s Urban Zen studio (Karan was meant to host, but she was stuck on a plane in Denver) in honor of Shinjo’s daughter Shinso, there was another fashion first: no place cards. Instead, entrées were served to guests in ceramic bowls while they reclined on sofas and sheepskin rugs. Kate Schelter, sipping sake with Carlos Mota, loved the cozy atmosphere. “The candle-to-person ratio is 100 to 1. It’s so chill!” she said. But the real “Ahhh!” moment of the night was the lunar eclipse. The entire party, including Miranda Kerr, Irina Pantaeva, Padma Lakshmi, Chiara Clemente, and Waris Ahluwalia, poured onto the balcony to witness the event. Damon Dash, however, wasn’t quite expecting it: “That eclipse scared me a little bit! It felt like a ‘Scarface’ moment—’The world is mine!’ “
