Even before you set foot in the Chelsea Art Museum for Wednesday’s Marchesa presentation, it was clear that something pretty nuts was going on inside. “What’s happening?” wondered several passers-by, and even fashion pros with engraved invitations were caught off guard by the battalion of press trucks and camera crews parked outside the building. Was something on fire? Had Mary-Kate come out of hiding…for Marchesa? A new reality TV show? It was much better than that: J. Lo, dressed to the nines in maternity Marchesa and about to pop, from the looks of it. Husband Marc Anthony held her by the arm as designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig gave fashion week’s prize celebrity catch a guided tour of the new collection. From the popping of flashbulbs, you’d think that the photographers were conducting a test to see if ultrabright blasts of light could induce La Lopez’s water to break. The presence of the paparazzi super-magnet left Marchesa-clad actresses Anne Hathaway and Eliza Dushku free to roam the presentation like civilians; latecomer Tara Subkoff, meanwhile, caught only the tail end of the maelstrom and seemed mildly bemused by it all. “Yeah, I was like—what the hell is going on?” she said with a husky laugh. “To be expected, I guess.” As for what’s going on with Ms. Subkoff: She welcomed her own “baby” to the world this week, a collaboration with Bebe. “It just got into stores and it’s flying off shelves. They think it’ll be sold out by next week.” A second Bebe collaboration may be in the works, but in the meantime, Subkoff is plotting her next post-Imitation move. “Whatever it is, it’ll be big.” J. Lo-bump big? “You’ll see.”
