Catherine Holstein has grown up fast in the three seasons since Barneys New York purchased the then-Parsons student’s final project. But that doesn’t mean the designer has lost touch with her roots: As pal Vanessa Traina held court at one end of Holstein’s jam-packed presentation at Thom Bar last night, Holstein herself could be found tucked in the far corner, hanging out with her mom. “She came up from Florida to see the collection,” said Holstein, “and I swear, I’m so glad to have her around, because no one supports me more.” But, she added, after politely asking Mom to fetch a fresh cocktail, it’s a little awkward talking fashion brass tacks with one’s mother beaming at one’s side. Once she was out of earshot, Holstein was all business: “We’re only showing a few looks from this season, because the new collection is so big. I felt like it was really important to expand the line beyond the capsules I’d been doing, and present a group of pieces that could be mixed and matched and merchandised.” The Miró-inspired, color-blocked collection says it best, but it bears repeating: Catherine Holstein may be a loving daughter, but when it comes to clothes, she’s no one’s little girl.
