red-letter day

Under the banner of the “passio factionis” motto emblazoned on Henry Holland’s customized crest, showgoers who share the designer’s single-minded passion for fashion could be forgiven for forgetting that yesterday was Valentine’s Day. Until they arrived at the Issa show to find little red bags on the front-row seats, that is. Of all the gifts given out this week, these were quite possibly the heaviest—as well as the most intellectually heavyweight. In addition to Slatkin & Co.’s Passion Kabbalah candle, the bag contained a sale catalog for Sotheby’s RED auction in New York City last night. The catalog was there so that Issa’s loyal social-girl clients like Leah Wood, Bee Shaffer, Marissa Montgomery, and Victoria Tang could still bid on the Valentine’s sale, in which all proceeds go to the United Nations Foundation to support HIV/AIDS relief in Africa. “I want Fred Tomaselli’s ‘Red Bird,’ ” Issa designer Daniella Helayel declared, zeroing in on a gouache-and-photo collage by the artist famous for collaging with pills. “I bid for it already. I wanted the Hirst pharmacy cabinet, but it’s not in my budget. The Tomaselli is, and it’s red, so it’s very Issa.”
