Bruce fans (i.e., design sophisticates who appreciate thoughtful renderings of tweaked-to-the-left classics in an urban-appropriate palette) were thrilled when Daphne Gutierrez and Nicole Noselli resurrected their label two seasons ago. In what’s turned out to be a serendipitous move, the pair have continued to concentrate on refining the ideas that captured their imaginations the first time around, like dresses that make you look cool rather than cute. “It’s funny, all the things we used to do that didn’t sell—high-waisted pants, bodysuits—are now doing really well,” says Noselli. Also on their minds for Fall ‘08 is the Barbet Schroeder film “Maîtresse” (1976), a reference that allowed the partners to riff on one of their favorite themes, the unitard. “The main character is a dominatrix,” Noselli explains. “She’s got a hidden dungeon in her apartment. So with the lace unitard, we were playing with the idea that you can have this secret life going on underneath.” “And then later we found out the costumes were by Karl Lagerfeld, who was doing Chloé at the time,” Gutierrez added. “The film was OK, but we were definitely into the clothes.”
