shlump chic

Even before the celebrity feeding frenzy at London fashion week’s main tent got under way this morning, Ann-Sofie Back’s show at the Topshop space on Sunday had taken away some of the fun of tabloid schadenfreude. Dedicated to “‘Heat’ and ‘OK!’ and all the misbehaving lovelies they portray,” the invite was an homage to celebrity schlump chic illustrated by three “got ya!” tabloid scenarios (e.g., a girl shot with a telescopic lens as she chatted on the phone while buried under mangy bangs, Ray-Bans, baggy sweats, a pillow coat, a sweater, a latte, and an It bag). The show itself focused on sullied, morning-after anti-glam—G-strings wrapped around models’ thighs, T-shirts with cubist patterns inspired by pixelated crotch shots, and oversize men’s suit jackets slung over slender shoulders. Studded leather minis referenced Paris Hilton’s preference for jeweled piercings and shredded hems, while customized tears and asymmetrical shapes paid homage to Kate Moss‘ ingenuity at improv-altering her torn dress during last season’s Victoria and Albert party. Despite the designer’s backstage assertion that she wasn’t particularly sympathetic to the celebs themselves—”I am just interested in other people’s interest in it. I find inspiration in what I don’t agree with. I am fascinated by whatever I find itchy and off”—this show could help redeem fallen idols like Britney Spears, at least in the eyes of London’s fashion followers.
