spat and polish

Shoes2

Shoe designer Eileen Shields has a dream: She wants to see women in spats. “It’s one of those projects I kept returning to and then putting aside,” she said. “You can’t get shoe people interested in them. Fashion people, on the other hand, see them as accessories.” Enter Maria Cornejo, who “loved the idea” and, for the second season in a row, asked Shields to create the footwear for her show. The knee-high spats made their debut on Cornejo’s Fall ‘08 runway last week, along with demi-wedge-heel ankle boots and pumps, flat riding boots, and modified oxfords in black and gray leathers and fuchsia hair calf. But back to the spats, which are cut from black stretch napa leather and can transform any type of shoe into a knee-high boot. “They fit like a glove,” Shields said. “They make your legs look like stovepipes.” Versatile and flattering—score one for collaborative efforts. Eileen Shields for Zero Maria Cornejo will be available at Zero Maria Cornejo boutiques.
