Eighty-year-old shutterbug Ron Galella, whose iconic images of celebrities like Jackie O and Robert Redford earned him the nickname “the godfather of the paparazzo,” scored major points last night when he reminded us that behind every successful man is an enterprising woman. “I’m basically famous because of my wife,” he said at the opening of his first-ever exhibit in France, at Le Bon Marché department store. “Back in the day, I never had the time to bargain with any of the newspapers or magazines. It was my wife’s idea to start charging $750 instead of $150 for photos of a fat Liz Taylor.” There aren’t any shots of Liz in her chubby days in his new book, “That’s Great!” which consists mainly of images of Galella’s hero from the Studio 54 epoque, Andy Warhol. “He was a great friend and we had a lot in common,” he said of his fellow celebrity-holic. We asked him for his opinion on the current crop of boldface names. “There were only ever three iconic female stars: Jackie Onassis, Princess Diana, and Liz Taylor. As for all of these dull featherweights you see today, the only thing they have really done is diminish the value of genuine star status.”
