Designer update

the bride wore black

February 8, 2008  11:59 am

Camilla Staerk only wears black. That fact may surprise anyone who first encountered the designer’s clothes at her debut New York show last season, when she sent a graphic, neon-punched “Twin Peaks”-inspired collection down the runway. But for fans who go back farther, to the Danish native’s tenure in London, last season was a surprise. “I had moved to the United States, I had changed my business,” Stærk recalls, “and I really needed to do something to shake myself up.” For Fall 2008, however, Stærk has returned to the brooding palette and romantic temper she loves best, with a newfound passion for sculptor Louise Nevelson as her guide. The Bride of the Black Moon collection sees the designer re-embracing her tactile side, working together leather and lace in unexpectedly sleek combinations. “I wanted to create the feeling I had encountering Nevelson’s work for the first time,” she explains. “The sensuality of it, and its almost primitive way of drawing you in.” Stærk’s collection, which hits the catwalk this afternoon, also marks a first for Gen Art, which awarded Stærk its first-ever show sponsorship for a single designer. “This collection feels very close to me,” Stærk says. “Louise’s work had such a powerful effect, and beyond that, having the show presented by Gen Art has been so amazing. I feel incredibly supported; I feel like I’m really a New York designer now. I feel like I’m home.”
