Comme

Comme des Garçons gave new meaning to the term concept store over the weekend. Eager Angelenos turned up to witness the brand’s first-ever guerrilla retail venture on American turf…only to be greeted by an industrial space filled with wooden hangers, empty clothing racks, and a 25-foot shopping cart sculpture. “We’re lucky with the weather, but we’re unlucky with customs,” explained CDG president outside of Japan (and hubby of Rei Kawakubo) Adrian Joffe, who informed disappointed shoppers that U.S. Customs had taken a liking to the stock—all 28 cartons of it—which was sent from France and Japan especially for the Saturday afternoon opening in downtown Los Angeles. Who knew customs officials had such good taste? Faced with the task of hosting a store opening minus the merch, Comme des Garçons pulled it off. Just as the droves of guests were starting to leave, a sudden cheer broke out. The reason for the outburst? A staff member had announced that the quarantined stock had been cleared and would be ready for delivery first thing this morning. Hallelujah!
