T: The New York Times Style Magazine may be hosting a Hollywood-themed party at the Grand Palais in Paris on Sunday night, but fashion’s most devoted red-carpet watchers will be staying in that evening. “Hamish [Bowles] and I will be ensconced at the Hôtel Costes watching Canal Plus,” Vogue’s Sally Singer said. “There’s not much pre-game. In France, it’s about the movies, sadly. When they do show dresses, it’s only from the waist up.” Singer and Bowles’ solution? Focus on the men. “There are a lot of very glamorous male nominees—Viggo Mortensen, Johnny Depp, Daniel Day Lewis,” she continued. “But they all have a tendency to favor a nonsensical coat.” Nearby at the Park Hyatt, Allure’s Michael Carl throws an annual Oscar party that rivals his Superbowl shindig. This year he says he’s expecting about 15 fellow editors and friends. “There’s a ballot, you can play for 20 euros, and the tie breaker is guessing what the big actress—this year, Cate Blanchett—will wear.” Carl wouldn’t commit regarding her dress, but he is betting she takes home at least one golden statuette; the seven-months-pregnant star is nominated in both the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories. The Times’ own Karla Martinez will wind down after the Grand Palais fête with a couple of friends at the Hotel Bristol. “I’ll be lucky if I don’t fall asleep within the hour, but I always love waking up and hearing all the talk about it anyway.” The ceremony itself does start late in Paris, at 2 a.m. local time. But showgoers have one thing in their favor: The first big défilé on Monday, Christian Dior, is scheduled for 2:30 in the afternoon.
