the knack and how to get it

It’s not easy being a young designer. Just ask Sarah Lerfel, whose talent for recognizing the next big thing has made Colette one of the most imitated fashion boutiques in the world. We caught up with her between shows and asked her what she looks for in a collection. “They have to have an identity. They have to complete something we don’t already have,” she said. “Gareth Pugh, Giles, Jeremy Scott—they are good because we cannot confuse their collections with other brands. [Designers] are stronger when they have a personal style. And of course, it helps if they deliver on time.” And who’s on her short list this season? Alexis Mabille, Sacai, Muriel, and Andrea Crews were a few of the names she was wiling to divulge.
