Designer update

the princess’ pick

February 17, 2008  7:34 pm

Unlike some of the others Scots who’ve come to the fashion fore lately, Graeme Black doesn’t have goth tendencies or a penchant for feats of sartorial trickery. For his show on Friday—his first since repatriating himself from Milan—he stuck to what he knows best: elegance and sophistication. But despite his 15 years in Italy, he didn’t ignore his roots: The collection was heavily influenced by the film “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.” “I wanted to use tartan in a new way, with a lightness of construction, and really show that it can be made luxurious,” he said. His front row was certainly of the sort that appreciates luxury. Said 15-year-old princess Najla al Saud of the Saudi royal family, “I loved the white dress with the crystal details on the back. If it were longer, I could see myself wearing it at a wedding. There were definitely some pieces that I am going to be bringing back with me.”
