Giunta

A little before 9 p.m. on Friday night, designer Justin Giunta could be found hustling around the back rooms of the 23rd Street Cipriani, a look of pure awe perma-printed on his face. “I’m totally mesmerized,” Giunta said, staring at the passel of black-clad dancers limbering up by the makeup and hair tables. “I’ve been waiting three years for this.” “This” referred to Giunta’s first-ever show for his jewelry line, Subversive—and true to the label’s name, the designer wasn’t playing by the usual fashion show rules. In a few minutes, those chorines would appear on the Cipriani dance floor with Giunta’s couture jewelry sewn to their leotards like breastplates, the better to keep the elaborate pieces secured firmly in place when the choreographed routine reached its high-kicking finale. As for the jewelry itself, Giunta acknowledged that the look represented a change of pace from the dense, vintage-inspired work that has won him so many plaudits in the past few years. “You know, everything’s a continuum,” he noted. “My collection for Target hits stores on March 23, and with that happening on one end, it seemed appropriate to do something really different and magical and couture on the other end. I mean, why not take the opportunity to do something crazy?”
