cash and carry

Film and fashion are a potent (and perennial) combination. Which is why Tod’s and Whitechapel’s Art Plus in London dedicated last night’s annual fundraiser gala for the gallery’s Expansion Project and Education Programme to artists and designers who pay homage to icons of film-star chic. The Henry Holland-designed invitation, for example, featured an image of the eternally emulated Audrey Hepburn. Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys and various other celebrities played DJ, and guests bid on specially made art by David Batchelor, Jonathan Monk, Simon Periton, Conrad Shawcross, Jamie Shovlin, and Daniel Sinsel. Also on the block in the silent auction was this one-of-a-kind bag, which was specially commissioned by Tod’s from artist Jim Lambie. The winning bid came from Diego Della Valle, who paid £2,400 (about $4,830) for it. Despite the plethora of handles and straps, though, he’s not going to carry it—it’s destined for the art museum he maintains at his company’s head office in Italy.
