New York-based designer Erin Featherston kicked off L.A. fashion week on Friday night with a cocktail party at Villa, West Hollywood’s hotspot du jour. For guests including Rosario Dawson, Rachel Zoe, Leelee Sobieski, and hosts Jeannie Lee of local boutique Satine and stylist Jeanne Yang, Featherston premiered a film, directed by Ellen von Unwerth and starring Zooey Deschanel that showed off a few of her ethereal dresses. In the short, Deschanel plays a little tramp—the Chaplin kind—who eats a magic mushroom and subsequently hangs out with a group of fairies. They sing and dance to the song “Tico Tico,” sung by The Andrews Sisters. “I live for this kind of project,” said Featherston, who did a short last year starring Kirsten Dunst. “I get to tell the full story of my collection.” This season, she said, “I wanted fairies. I wanted singing and dancing. And Zooey is a friend and muse. Her new album [with M. Ward] is so good it’s mindblowing.” As for how life has changed since having her designs at Target, Featherston said: “Every time I go outside, I see my clothes. It’s amazing!”
