Designer update

hart of darkness

March 13, 2008  10:28 am

Look6

You won’t find Erik Hart humming "My Favorite Things," the "Sound of Music" stalwart about the joys of copper kettles and woolen mittens, under his breath. "I’m attracted to darkness," says the L.A.-based designer. "Darker imagery, darker colors, darker poetry. I like the rain." And so, following on the heels of Morphine Generation, the streetwear line he founded to fund his band, Suicide Club, Hart has launched an eponymous men’s and women’s ready-to-wear line that he’s debuting not on the runway, but in a short film about a fictitious band called the Dark Harts. "It’s loosely based on the last four years of my life in Suicide Club—the aesthetic, the music, being in love with someone in your band, missing people when you’re on the road. I didn’t want to show the characters playing music, though—that’s too much of a cliché." And while the clothes are dependably rock ‘n’ roll—skinny trousers, blazers, lots of black—they’re not clichéd, either. To view Hart’s film, click here.
