kiss and tell

When Frank Tell hit on the idea of embellishing his Fall 2008 collection with hundreds of silver buttons, he knew he had a good thing going. He just didn’t realize how good. "We made the belts as styling pieces for the show," Tell explains of the jingly-jangly waist-cinchers, one of his collection’s more directional winks at mod icon Penelope Tree. "Something to make the clothes pop. There were no plans to, like, sell them." Plans changed, however, when the first enthusiastic buyers came trooping through Tell’s tiny studio on the Lower East Side. "Everyone wanted the belts," he recalls with a smile. "We pretty much had to make up a price on the spot." Tell might have guessed his belts would find a warm reception with retailers—after all, Tell fan Olivia Palermo had already appropriated one to wear and be photographed in over fashion week. But anyone with hopes that Tell will prove as accommodating about the skyscraper stilettos he and cobbler Tania Spinelli created for his presentation should prepare themselves for disappointment. "Nope," Tell acknowledged with a gentle smile. "Not for sale."
