Laird Borrelli-Persson reports from Japan fashion week.

Thursday, March 13

9 a.m.

I have breakfast with Ed Tsuwaki, an illustrator and the designer of nakEd bunch. I’m hoping to go to his boutique in Daikayama this weekend, especially after I see his outfit: customized Levis and printed sneakers from his own line paired with a Comme des Gar?ons Rolling Stones sweatshirt.

Next I have a meeting with Yoshikazu Yamagata, a fine artist and the co-designer of a line of conceptual clothing called Written Afterwards. This season everything is made of terry cloth. The concept, Yamagata says, is homewear (as opposed to streetwear). "I wanted to capture the emotion of when you wake up in the morning and it’s cold and you don’t want to get up and get dressed," he says. "These are clothes that you get changed into in bed."

Time for Naomi Yamamoto’s (no relation to Yohji) Tiny Dinosaur show. The highlights are some drapey dresses and a vest coat with yellow fur trim at the back.

2:30 p.m.

Vogue Nippon’s Mihoko Iida has organized a store tour. The first stop is DressCamp, a Versace-esque Japanese label hoping to get a foothold in Paris. Then we head to New York artist Kaws’ Original Fake shop before moving on to Comme des Gar?ons. Iida explains that each CdG shop in Tokyo carries different merchandise, so fans need to make the rounds regularly to get the latest merch. From CdG we go to 10 Corso Como, where my favorite pieces are the Louis XIV-meets-Coco Chanel jackets by Junya Watanabe and a classic dress from Commuun. We wind up the afternoon with stops at Loveless and Tsumori Chisato before adjourning for tea.

The cherry blossoms aren’t quite out yet, but they’re already in bloom at Anniversaire caf?, in the form of a cherry-filled pastry called sakura.

Iida brings me to Kiddy World, a sort of Sanrio-style nirvana. I couldn’t resist the Courr?ges stationery. Our last stop before dinner with some Vogue Nippon staff is Galerie Doux Dimanche, a little Parisian-style boutique in the coeur of Tokyo.
