Rossellini4

The Italian Trade Commission wants you to learn what most designers already know: The best fabrics come from Italy. “For centuries it has been the center of textile manufacturing,” explained Isabella Rossellini at Bergdorf Goodman yesterday evening. Rossellini is the commission’s global ambassador, and she was at the Fifth Avenue department store for the launch of an exhibit of clothes created by Rhode Island School of Design students in partnership with premier Italian mills. “We don’t have oil, gold, or other natural resources in Italy. We have artisans, and that is what makes up the wealth of our country.” The RISD designs—a nubby wool sweater, am ombré silk dress, a wool shift treated to look as though it were made of hair—were based on the theme of global travel, and will be on view at Bergdorf until March 14.
