“Oh yeah, man!” yelled Tony Alva from behind the DJ decks set up in the window of his Fairfax Avenue store in Los Angeles on Saturday evening. The skating legend was caught off guard—not from the punk rock blaring from the sound system but by the entrance of girlfriend Katy Rodriguez and a surprise guest, acclaimed artist Raymond Pettibon. By the time the two arrived at the opening for “Alva: 77 Neo-Retro,” the store was well on its way to being jam-packed as guests attempted to score a sneak peak at the collaborative artworks created by graphic design king Shepard Fairey, photographer Glen E. Friedman, and Alva himself. “It all just came together, mostly out of the fact that we all enjoy similar things in life—skating being one of them,” explained Alva of the store’s first-ever exhibit. In between signing three autographs for teenage fans in the space of minutes, Alva spilled the beans on his next project: a surfing trip to Costa Rica with Rodriguez that officially kicks off today.
