With the Beijing games nigh upon us, the time has come to accept that this is China’s century; we’re just living in it. The great ebb of the West goes down a touch easier, however, when one is appareled in a pair of Feiyue trainers. Pronounced FAY-wee, the iconic Chinese sneak is now making its U.S. debut at Nom de Guerre in Manhattan, with more stateside retailers soon to follow. Hipsters will no doubt flock to the defiantly low tech shoes, which haven’t changed much since they made their debut in pre-Communist Shanghai, circa 1920, and which boast the added oddball pedigree of being the favorite footwear of Shaolin martial arts masters. But in the brave new Chinese century, the line between style and anti-style is vanishingly thin. Thus, Feiyue fans can get an honest-to-God fashion fix by scouting out a pair of the brand’s basketball shoes designed in collaboration with Celine. The French mag WAD is co-hosting the launch party at ParisParis on March 16, which raises an important caveat to the aforementioned Sino triumphalism: Feiyue is now based in France.
