society of friends

Never underestimate the power of a well-placed acquaintance. So Wren designer Melissa Coker learned when she was putting together a series of short black-and-white films to highlight pieces from her Fall collection. The films, which were directed by Alia Raza and had their first screenings at the Taylor De Cordoba gallery in L.A. last night, feature women such as Arden Wohl, Kim Gordon, and Margherita Missoni. “They’re all friends of friends,” Coker explained. “You know how it is—I lived in New York for ten years and one of them is the girlfriend of a friend and so on.” As Coker spoke, guests milled around looking at models posing in an assortment of party frocks inspired by Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. But the arrival of one attendee in particular had the designer grinning from ear to ear. “Oh my God, it was amazing! He’s like a mentor for me,” she squealed after a brief visit from her ex-boss, Vogue’s André Leon Talley.
