Designer update

star power

Beginning in childhood, when she spent hours marooned in her astrologer father’s library, the allure of the zodiac has been a constant for jewelry designer Ella Poe. “I remember hanging out on Sundays in his study just going through all of his books and being totally fascinated by the intricacies of how these stars actually affect us,” Poe recalls. The designer, who started out making pieces from mother-of-pearl and semiprecious stones while a student at NYU, soon began designing custom pieces for a burgeoning clientele more accustomed to platinum and diamonds. Using EcoGold and conflict-free stones in her latest collection, The Constellations, enabled Poe to reconcile her environmentally friendly sensibility with a love of luxury materials. “My aesthetic definitely falls between where East and West meet,” says Poe, who grew up partly on a Hindu ashram. “The idea is Eastern conceptually, but the aesthetic is much more modern and Western.” We had to ask: What’s her sign? “I’m a Pisces. I think that’s where a lot of the creative stuff comes from.”
