“I was freezing in New York over the last couple of months. The warmest part of my body was my feet, thanks to my cashmere and wool-blend socks,” says Hannah Byun, the designer behind the California-based legwear label Hansel from Basel. A former studio art and art history student, she referenced Mondrian’s graphic prints for spring; for fall, she continued her artistic explorations with a range called the “cactus and doily series.” “It’s humorous and lighthearted, with printed tights and button accessory detailing on the socks,” she explains, adding, “It’s part of the plan to eventually move into intimates and novelty accessories one day.” For the record, the brand is named after Byun’s childhood alter ego, who wanders the Swiss Alps wearing lederhosen, a yodeling hat, and knee-high socks. Hannah from Basel is available at Barneys New York, Opening Ceremony, and Creatures of Comfort.
