where’s the beef?

March 3, 2008  9:45 am

The meal of choice this season in Paris was of the old-fashioned sort: steak. And we’re not talking about dinner, either. In response to a grueling schedule of shows—not to mention the showroom appointments and blog-post filings that come in between—a segment of the fashion flock (we include ourselves in this group) are putting aside their food neuroticisms to indulge in a midday protein fix. “I have discovered the cure,” announced one buyer over dinner at John Galliano’s favorite Italian restaurant, L’Osteria, on Rue de Sévigné (where they happen to serve a very good Italian bistecca). “One large steak for lunch and that sees you through.” Amid general agreement, the following restaurants emerged as the best places to get your beef on: Anahi (for brilliant Argentine cuts), Robert et Louise (for côte de bœuf licked with butter and cooked over an open fire), and of course Le Cinq in the Hôtel Four Seasons George V (where they serve what is arguably the best filet mignon in France). Don’t say we didn’t tell you.
