Designer update

a new york state of mind

April 10, 2008  12:28 pm

Lacroix

Though his opulent frocks are prominently featured in one of the quintessential Gotham novels, Tom Wolfe’s “The Bonfire of the Vanities,” Christian Lacroix has never had a boutique in the city—until this week, that is. The designer is in town to inaugurate his new 57th Street digs with a cocktail party and dinner tonight. But first, he chatted with Style.com about why he loves New York.

What’s the first thing you do when you get to New York?

See exhibitions in museums or galleries, buy some new clothes, walk around my favorite areas, watch everything (people, shop windows, the sky).

What’s your favorite thing about the city?

Besides verticality, the hugeness, and the light from the Atlantic Ocean, I think I like its very personal, individual history and unique character.

What souvenir do you bring back with you?

Everything connected with American movies and cinema.
