Selima

Selima Optique and Accessories, which re-opened in Soho on Friday night, has a strongly stylized aesthetic. Three-dimensional eyeglasses are planted on the faces of the painted and photographic portraits that cover the walls, while cases show off collaborations between designer and optician Selima Salaun and fashion’s cool set—Proenza Schouler, Camilla Stærk, and Adam Kimmel. “We wanted to make the store look like it’d been here for 200 years—European, very established,” Selima explained of the “optical illusion” she set out to create. Commenting on the eyewear, pal Catherine Malandrino said, “Selima approaches [design] with a lot of individuality.” How individual? Moments after we chatted with Malandrino, Selima took us over to a pair of dotted sunglasses and explained how she had designed them specifically with her friend in mind, explaining that they were for a sexy, strong, feminine woman. Then she showed us a pair she had designed for her daughter, who’d requested a style that was “big, but not too Nicole Richie.” We’d say she nailed it.
