Designer update

hats off

April 18, 2008  12:12 pm

Though you might not think the doyenne of downtown millinery would find much to love in an established accessories concern such as Coach, Eugenia Kim sums up her reaction to creative director Reed Krakoff’s invitation to design a capsule hat collection for the brand in two words: “freakishly excited.” The evidence of Kim’s excitement was there yesterday at Norwood House, where Coach hosted a tea party to celebrate her mini collection’s debut. Not only had the designer and her entourage arrived in Coach-inspired one-off chapeaus, but, as Kim explained, the dozen hats on view represented only a fraction of her design output on behalf of the house. “Reed asked me for eight hats,” she recalled. “I gave them about 40. They were like, um, 40? Really? I’m such a Coach fanatic, seriously, I could keep going.” Eventually, Kim and the leather goods house split the difference, producing 20 pieces. The remaining designs may yet make it to the racks at Coach, however: The collaboration is set to continue for at least one more season.
