surfing, samba, and suede shoes

April 25, 2008  5:07 pm

Hogan’s cocktail and shopping party to benefit the Surfrider Foundation came on a day of what might almost be called beach weather. While the sunny vibes had Lucy Sykes Rellie and Gucci Westman, fresh off her first day as global artistic creator at Revlon, eagerly trying on the same pair of suede wedge heels, they had Marie Claire fashion editor Tracy Taylor, an L.A. native and the event’s co-host, talking reef preservation and colossal Malibu waves—in particular the one that smacked her down at age 7. “I’m really good at watching surfing and looking at surfers now,” she said. Leven Rambin popped by, and “America’s Most Smartest Model”’s Mary Alice Stephenson, who was busy styling Michelle Monaghan for a Tribeca Film Festival event, paused to discuss what might well be her next TV gig: “I would absolutely represent the fashion industry on ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ The waltz, the fox-trot, the samba, I love it all,” she said. “Donatella could design an outfit, we get Michael Kors in there, a little Donna Karan, a little Balenciaga…” Personally, we think this would be like stripping a peacock of its brilliant plumage. Let the spangled unitards live another day, Mary Alice, they’re part of the fun.
